Social Media Workshop for BizAcademy 2010

On Mar 17, 2010, I was invited to speak at the BizAcademy on social media strategy. BizAcademy is a 1-week business bootcamp during March break for entrepreneurial-minded youth that are around Toronto, between the ages of 15-19, and interested to be part of a community-oriented youth-led business. This program is an initiative of LOFT (Life Opportunities Food and Technology) from the Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre and is sponsored by the Salesforce.com Foundation. In its 3rd year running, the students this year were split into 3 groups to compete in developing a sales and marketing plan for LOFT’s soon-to-be launched social enterprise – Under the Radar.

I told the group if there was anything I want them to remember from my presentation, there will be 2 things:

  1. Social media isn’t your marketing strategy, but it’s a catalyst to your marketing strategy.
  2. Social media done right is a very powerful tool, but you need a plan in order to use the tool right.

My presentation was essentially built on the 2 messages above, further outlining the 10 steps to develop that social media plan.

One of the LOFT coordinators Jessika Agarita was kind enough to let me know my presentation was very useful for her as well as the students. I also offered to help develop the  social media strategy for Under the Radar. I am usually reluctant to talk about social media as I belong to the camp of people that are getting tired of people talking about social media on social media. However, LOFT and the people running it are so amazing that I feel so privileged that I could be a part of the team that makes this happen. I will be posting more updates as I get a chance to meet with them again.

Here is more background information on the LOFT program and Under the Radar. Definitely check them out!

The LOFT program was developed in 2001, in consultation with and in response to the expressed interests of local youth, with a mission to address youth issues and concerns raised in the Christie-Ossington community through meaningful engagement and community development. The program aims to provides opportunities for marginalized community youth to develop skills integral to employment education opportunities while supporting their development as community citizens. The centre offers youth many ways to get involved as well as necessary tools to help them succeed, such as computer access, mentorship, technical training (music production, graphic design, website development), community kitchen and cafe, graffiti arts program, annual street festival, sound recording studio, and sport tournaments. Under the Radar is a brand of clothing that allows these young artists to express themselves through mural paintings and other forms of arts, as well as an opportunity to learn about production, marketing and distribution in the clothing business.
